Follow the links on the left, or call us at our toll-free number to see what I mean. Home use machine quilting tables are a fairly new item. Several manufacturers now offer them, with varying prices and results. You can buy them from about $350.00 up to thousands of dollars for the industrial types. Some of the things that should be considered before purchasing a Machine Quilting Table are: Are the rods strong enough? A small or weak rod will bow when the tension of the quilt is tightened, causing two problems. The quilt will not be taut enough in the center, and if you are sewing with a pattern, the pattern on the quilt will not be straight from end to end. Can you control the speed of the sewing machine from the carriage? If you cannot, trying to stand on one foot and controlling the speed with the other is very difficult, and can be tiring if you do it for very long. Also, you have to stop several times while sewing from one side of the quilt to the other, in order to move the pedal. Is it stable? Some are made from very light materials, and that can sacrifice stability. This can create excessive vibration, and make it difficult to quilt a pattern accurately. How do you attach the quilt to the rods? Some manufacturers have you pin it, or even tape it. If it is not attached in a positive manner, it can be very difficult to get the quilt straight, and with the correct tension. How do you move and guide the machine? Some manufacturers do not include handles for the carriage, or offer them for an additional cost. If they are not at a comfortable height, quilting quickly becomes very tiring, and possibly dangerous to your health. How do you tension the quilt? The ratchet gear system is the best available. You should be able to lock the side and end tension exactly how you want it. Some manufacturers use elastic for the end tension, or have you to try and pin it taut, which does not give you a positive lock. Buying a quilting frame that does not perform as it should can be a very costly and disappointing experience. The Grace Machine Frame excels on each of the items I pointed out above. We sell often to people who had bought a frame that did not meet one or more of the criteria I listed above, and were disappointed with it. Several of the quilting frames available were designed to use off the shelf materials, and ease of manufacture. When you use something in a product because it is available, and not especially because it is the best for the job, the final product will be inferior to a product that is designed from the ground up to do what it is being designed to do, regardless of cost or the availability of materials. Before you buy a machine quilting table, make sure that it meets the standards I have outlined above. The Sewing Machine: Most home use portable sewing machines will work on the frame. You need about 6 5/8 inches clearance between the needle and the neck to sew about a 4 inch pattern. The thickness of the batting you use can change the maximum width of the pattern. The New Home HF1012 has 6 5/8 clearance, and the Juki TL 98E has 8 5/8, allowing you to sew approximately a 6 inch pattern. If it is in your budget, I recommend the Juki machine. One of the things that puts it above the others is the thread cutter. It has a red button on the control, which cuts the thread when pressed. This is a very good feature, and you will thank yourself many times for getting it. It is also very fast, so you will spend less time on each quilt. I hope the information here has helped you. Of course, I am biased - I sell the Grace Machine Frame. However, we chose to sell it because we felt that it was, and still is, the best home quilting frame available, and we believe in giving our customers the best product available at the best price possible. To us, that is the only way to do business. If you are a member of a quilting club or other organization, and several of your friends want a machine quilting frame or combo, call or contact us about a volume discount.
